Two different power plants are available, both borrowed from the 5-Series. Initially the V8 was the only engine available, with 6-cylinder X5s going on sale this spring. The 2001 BMW X5 is currently available in two trims, the 3.0i and 4.4i. Safety features are numerous and include dual front airbags, dual side airbags, Head Protection System (HPS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC-X), full-time all-wheel drive, an anti-lock brake system (ABS), and all-season traction control. Powering the 3.0i is a new 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine that produces 225 horsepower. The 4.4i gets a 4.4-liter V8 that puts out 282-horsepower. Standard equipment on the 3.0i includes a 5-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, an AM/FM stereo with cassette, an onboard computer, leatherette seat trim, front and rear stabilizer bars, and 17-inch cast alloy wheels. The 4.4i upgrades with a 5-speed automatic transmission, dual-zone automatic climate control, Montana leather seat trim, dual power front seats, and 18-inch alloy wheels. An available Sport Package upgrades with front sport seats, sport suspension, black chrome exhaust pipes, and 19-inch wheels fitted with high-performance tires.
