This, combined with the latest StabiliTrak stability control system, low-profile performance tires and speed-sensitive steering tells you that Cadillac is looking to give the XLR serious performance to complement its luxury. Cadillac engineers utilized aluminum and magnesium composite to insure the XLR didn't turn into a bloated behemoth. Many suspension components are made of aluminum, and special composite body panels help keep the weight down. The XLR weighs less than other luxury roadsters such as the Jaguar XK8, Lexus SC 430 and Mercedes-Benz SL500, even though it's longer and wider than any of the three. With so much technology and performance packed into such a small package, the XLR's premium price shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, but it does push Cadillac into previously uncharted territory. At almost $80,000, the XLR makes no concessions to its high-dollar European competitors, and that's just the way Cadillac wants it.
